Operation ELLAMY, the name for the UK mission to enforce the United Nations resolution to protect Libyan citizens, showcased the UK’s military capability and the professionalism of all Service personnel working together.

Operation Ellamy aimed to prevent the imminent humanitarian crisis looming over Libya, where the oppressive regime of Muammar Gaddafi posed a severe threat to his own people.

From March to October 2011, Operation Ellamy involved aerial bombings, strikes against military infrastructure, and naval actions in the Mediterranean Sea. By crippling Gaddafi’s air defenses, the coalition aimed to neutralize his capacity to attack Libyan civilians. The operation also facilitated the delivery of humanitarian aid, allowing support to reach those in desperate need. Operation Ellamy achieved significant milestones. It not only prevented a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe but also played a vital role in enabling Libyan rebels to ultimately overthrow the Gaddafi regime. This operation demonstrated the international community’s resolve to protect innocent lives and uphold the principles of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine.
